Number of Noun

Number কাকে বলেঃ যাহা দ্বারা কোনো বস্তু বা প্রাণীর সংখ্যা বুঝায় তাকে Number বলে।

Number দুই প্রকার। যথা:

(i) Singular
(ii)Plural

বি:দ্র: Number শুধুমাত্র countable noun এর common, collective noun এ number পরিবর্তন হয়ে থাকে। কিন্তু Proper(কিছু), material, ও Abstract noun এ number পরিবর্তন হয়না।

# শেষে ‘O’ এর পূর্বে consonant থাকার পরও কিছু শব্দের শেষে শুধু ‍s যুক্ত হয়।

# সংখ্যা, প্রতীক, বা বর্ণের শেষে apostrophe (‘s) যোগ করে Plural করতে হয়।

# একাংশ ব্যতিত সকল ভগ্নাংশ Plural হবে। (one third) is singular but (two third) is Plural.

# কিছু শব্দ আছে যেগুলো সব সময় Singular:

abuse, advice, alphabet, bread, furniture, information, knowledge, poetry, issue, offspring, scenery, canon, cannon, corps, deer, dozen, hundred, thousand, pice, public, score, series, sheep, species, swine, ইত্যাদি

# কিছু শব্দ আছে যেগুলো দেখতে plural এর মত কিন্ত এরা Singular:

Ethics, gallows, innings, mathematics, news, physics, politics, economics, optics, wages, athletics ইত্যাদি

# কিছু শব্দ আছে যেগুলো সব সময় Plural:

alms, amends, aborigines, ashes, assets, belongings, bowels, environs, fetters, measles, numps, nuptials, poultry, proceeds, savings, scissors, spectacles, surroundings, tidings, trousers, vitals ইত্যাদি

# কিছু Noun আছে যেগুলো Singular ও Plural উভয় হিসেবেই ব্যবহার হয়:

Deer, Sheep, canon, gross, pice, apparatus, swine, apices, innings, corps, salmon, fruit, fish, ইত্যদি

# নিচের শব্দগুলোর opposite number লিখে অনুশীলন কর।

# পরিক্ষায় Number থেকে যেভাবে প্রশ্ন আসে তার আলোকে কিছু প্রশ্ন দেওয়া হলো।

বি:দ্রঃ মনে রাখতে হবে noun+s/es= plural কিন্তু Verb+s = Singular

যেমন pens হচ্ছে plural এবং plays হচ্ছে Singular

He has Seven—-(ox).
There are three—- (M.A.) in our village.

He lost all his —- (tooth).
The green —– (leaf) look beautiful.
He has five —– (man-servant) in his house.

The cat killed two —- (mouse).
I saw two ——(cuckoo) on the tree.

# নিচের বাক্যগুলির Subject কে Singular করে প্রয়োজনীয় অন্যান্য পরিবর্তন কর।

These oranges are very sweet.
Those mangoes are not ripe.
Three boys were present yesterday.

Good children are liked by all.
There are ten benches in this room.
The windows facing the street are broken.

The thieves were arrested last night.

# নিচের বাক্যগুলির Subject কে Plural করে প্রয়োজনীয় অন্যান্য পরিবর্তন কর।

The boy is playing in the play ground.

The girl is dancing gracefully.
A bird is singing on the tree.
The owl sleeps in the day-time.

A bad boy hides his faults.
The book was on the table.
The shop was closcd yestereday.

# নিচের অনুচ্ছেদটির boy শব্দটিকে boys দিয়ে প্রতিস্থাপন করে অন্যান্য পরিবর্তন কর।

The boy gets up at six in the morning. He washes his hands and face and cleans his teeth. He takes his breakfast with his parents. Then he reads up to 9 a.m. Then he has his bath. After lunch he starts for school at 10 a.m. He returns home at 4 p.m. and then he takes some tiffin and goes to the play ground. Coming back home at 6 p.m. he reads his lessons attentivety. He takes his dinner at 10 p.m. and then goes to bed.
